Casey broke her leg in July of this year and it was a little scary because Christy and I have never broken any bones up to this point. We didn’t know what this would be like and we were kind of dreading having a toddler with a cast. She rolled with it and was walking on it with a great amount of confidence in just a few days. The big lesson we learned in this was that you should always ask questions when you are visiting a doctor or nurse practitioner. They are human and can miss things like anyone else. In our case, the urgent care we took Casey to the day after her fall missed the break even though they took several X-rays of the effected area. It wasn’t until 2 days later that I got a call that the radiologist found a fracture. In the mean time, Casey was completely unwilling to put any weight on her leg and understandably so.

Here is the original X-ray from the urgent care. I cropped the image and added the yellow arrows to help you spot the fracture. You can click on it to get a full rez image. Its possible that if I had asked to see the film that day at the urgent care I might have seen the fracture and asked what it was. Just keep that in mind the next time you visit any health care pro, any mechanic, anybody that comes into do work on your home. Ask lots of questions.

I have written about how Casey is hungry like a wolf at night. Usually starting around 7 she is hungry and its really hard for Christy to keep up with her. Every other night is a really tough bed time. Tonight she seems to be a little warm in bed and we think she might not feel good.

We have seen signs that she might be working on teething these days and that comes with little fevers and random discomfort. So that is being tossed on top of the wolf-like hunger. We were hitting on a good system of giving her a bottle of express milk before bed and she was usually good with that. She would nurse for a few minutes for the comfort of it and then off to sleepy-land. We can’t get her to take a bottle anymore and will be starting a new offensive tomorrow to get her back to accepting a bottle.

Pray for us and mostly Christy and Casey. Its frustrating for Christy because she has a hungry baby attached to her for 3 hours straight and then its hard to get her in bed because she is not feeling 100%.

I know this won’t last long, but its times like these when I get just a little stressed.

Casey does fun things and annoying things. They are all treasured. A few of them I want to commit to the annals of the interweb and this blog so we won’t forget them. Maybe some of them are fun for you to read too.

These are the Casey Chronicles.

Today we are a few days into Casey as a 3 month old.

Casey gets very hungry at night. With that hunger comes a refusal to sleep from 4p to her bedtime between 9:30 and 10. We have started feeding her express milk in a bottle to wrap up the day and get her a good full tummy for bedtime. This works sometimes with no problem and other nights she gets raging mad about the bottle. We haven’t figured out why. Tonight she gave us her loudest objection to the bottle we have seen to-date. So we broke out one of the other types of bottles we have in the drawer and transferred the milk over and she took about half of it with ZERO complaints (special thanks to Andy and Traci). Second half was more refusal so we caved and put her back at the boob. Score one for finally realizing the change was needed, deduct one for taking so long to try something different. Deduct half for not getting her to eat the rest of the bottle like we planned. We’ll learn.

When its time for Casey to eat she usually nurses from Mom. She usually gives little more than a few squaks or frowns when she is hungry because Christy has a pretty good schedule down and we know its coming before she does. When Christy puts her on her boppy and gets her ready to eat if eating isn’t happening in exactly 2.45 seconds she will start yelling and screaming until she gets a boob in her mouth.

I don’t think we can teach her to be just a little more patient at this age. We think its pretty funny.

Thats enough for now. There are many more things that I will write when they come to mind.

Today we packed up and got Casey out of the house and off to church. We planned on missing the first couple of weeks but it was high time to get out as a family. We were all set to leave the house and get to church 15 minutes early (just in case) and right before we put her in her seat she got real grumpy and we figured we had better feed her before we left. That event made us realize that its time to try to start training a ‘hunger pattern’ so that we can at least predict her feeding times. Because of this unplanned feeding we were 5 minutes late to church. Its ok, almost everyone else that attends Impact Church is 5 minutes late too.

I am kind of surprised I didn’t take a picture – I need to get more on top of remembering to take pictures and videos. I suspect that our time with her as a newborn will slip away before we know it and I don’t want to let it go by without pictures. Having said that, I am going to try to commit to myself to take a picture of her every day. I won’t worry about posting them here but I think there is no excuse when my phone has a 3 Megapixel camera on it.

Well there you have it, some frivolous thoughts as I sit on the couch with Casey tonight.

Tomorrow at 11:39am we will have had our daughter for 2 weeks. Crazy to think its already been two weeks but it has. When I look at my little girl I can see she is already growing and she is quickly transforming from a squishy little lump to an alert and figity little girl. She spends more time awake and when she is awake she is moving around, kicking and reaching and her grasp is becoming more confident. Christy and I can’t believe that in just a few short months she will be crawling!

Before she was born I assumed I would look forward to her growing a little and becoming a little kid that I could relate to and that I could get smiles out of. Now that she is here I want to freeze time; I don’t want her to grow up at all and I love getting up with her in the middle of the night and I love sitting with her on the couch so we can let Mom get some sleep. These times are going to be so brief I want to soak it all up as much as I can.

We have learned a lot about her like how much she loves to sleep on the couch pillows. She is dead quiet on the couch and for some reason she isn’t as in love with her cradle in our bedroom. We have learned she likes to have her legs swaddled but not her arms because she prefers to sleep with her arms up over her head. Now, for as many things as we have learned about her we have developed even more questions. I suppose that might always stay out of balance.

To celebrate 2 weeks I have a few pictures of her time with us so far. Some of you have been asking. You can see more on my Flickr stream as well as on my Facebook.

After nearly a month I have returned to the world wide web. Verizon had a few hickups getting me connected to the world but finally after about every problem that could come up they got me hooked up.

I have a few things to mention if you don’t follow my life via twitter or get regular phone calls from me. Life has changed drastically for the Woolseys in the last month or so. You know we had a baby coming and she has arrived! She came on December 23rd at 11:39am. She was born 7lbs 5oz and howling at the sudden thrust into this world. She has since become a very alert little one and is threatening to start sleeping 5 to 6 hours per night.

The other major change that occurred in the month of December was the purchase of another house. This one caught me somewhat off guard because I figured we would stay at our old house for quite some time. But a few things fell into place and after a lot of prayer and some sweat we found ourselves moving to a new home. We still live in Murrieta, in fact we didn’t really move far at all. We got an extra bedroom, a bigger garage and much more space to spread out in the back yard.

So all in all, December has been quite a month. I am working to catch up on the pictures of Casey as well as a few shots of the house. We take pictures of Casey every day, the house on the other hand hasn’t been photgraphed since we moved in. I will take a few pictures of home-sweet-home and get them up for everyone to check out.
