Yard Update | I Know, I Know

June 5th, 2008 John Posted in Community, Friends, Gardening No Comments »

I promise, I do think about other thing other than my yard and have in fact been thinking about something I should be doing with this blog in light of the new baby that is on its way.  That being said, the reason I keep writing about my yard isn’t because I want to bore you, but because I have become very involved.  Do you know that I have taken to spending my daytime office work at the patio table outside so that I can be closer to the lawn!?  I wonder if it will be like that when the baby is here, setting up a computer in his/her room so I can be close…  I digress.  Take a look at these pictures.  In the last couple of days the lawn has really greened up.  I decided to put a gallery up instead of just one picture because there is a ton of life out back, and I thought I would share some of it with you.  Not only will I be holding Boccie tournaments out there but I think a movie night out there might be in order with the neighbors.

Ok, I promise next time I won’t even mention my yard.

Hellfire Preacher Stirs Up Campuses

March 13th, 2008 John Posted in Community, Religion No Comments »

I caught this article on Newsvine.com today.  Its the classic fire and brimstone lone wolf on the corner story but something caught my attention.  He does this to stir up a spectacle and then has real conversations with people afterward.  As an alumni of a nationally recognized party university I know that guys like him become very popular on a college campus.  Anywhere else this guy would be hated but on college campuses like those he visits he is a celebrity who draws a crowd every time.  I would never recommend this approach, but maybe his is working in its own weird way.  He is making people talk about something they wouldn’t normally be talking about long after his tirade is over.

I wouldn’t do what he does, and he does alienate some.  But there are those that walk away thinking about something new.  God works in mysterious ways…

Thinking Inside the Weekend

Soak Impact Church River TripThis year Impact Church is going to the Colorado River for its summer family camp. We are working pretty hard to get the costs to something manageable so that lots more people can come. But sometimes manageable doesn’t just mean costs, sometimes its scheduling. Every modest sized church I have ever been a part of (including Impact up to this point) that does vacation stuff like going out to the river or desert or even fishing has done one thing that excludes so many. They go during the week! I don’t know why other churches have done that but I know we have always leaned toward going outside the weekend because we wanted to preserve the importance of Sunday worship. This year, we are switching gears and will be utilizing the talents of our ministry team differently by having trips like this on the weekend so that normal people with regular jobs can go.

Now the application here is this: we are going to have programming at the river Friday, Saturday & Sunday. We have a team ministry model at Impact Church so there are FOUR pastors! That means that we should be able to do this. Here is our plan. Friday and Saturday we will have all four pastors out and Saturday night Jeff & Travis will leave so that Church happens as scheduled and expected on Sunday at Thompson Middle School. Vince and I will remain at the river with some of our oversight and we will have church Sunday morning at the campground. This is a cool step for us because we are not a large church and usually we employ our entire ministry staff every Sunday. This is a step toward growth for this ministry and hopefully a step in our reach into our community.

If you live around Murrieta and would like to join us, you are welcome to come along - this is an open event. Go to the Impact Church website and click on the Soak 2008 image or you can click on the image in this post, it takes you to the same place.

From The Coffee Table

February 19th, 2008 John Posted in Blogging, Church, Community, Impact Church No Comments »

Every week we have our pastoral staff meeting. Each week includes a different ministry group. Last night was the children and youth week and we had some new faces! I have written about staff meetings before on the Impact Church blog and have recently got out of the habit. That will be changing and I am rededicating myself to keeping everyone posted on the current and future developments at Impact Church.

So go check out the Impact Church blog and see what is new from the Coffee Table.
