Wielding a Hammer…

Can be pretty intimidating when what you are hitting are things you are comfortable with.  By nature I am a “get it all done myself kind of guy” because “at the end of the day no one will care enough to do it the way I think it should get done.”  I have preached about handing off keys in ministry and have done so to an extent.  God is making me do it for real now.  Its good though, I can see how this is going to be a good thing for me and for the ministries of Impact Church.  I am starting to see through the pressures in my own life how I have held onto keys for too long.  I must admit, I am still slow to ask too much of people because I want to be sensitive to their lives and the work load they bear without me coming along.  However, since my time is becoming more and more of a rare commodity I am going to start laying things before people and seeing what the leaders around me will take up.  My job needs to be less about the work and more about the leaders that are carrying the burden for the work.  I need to be an encourager and I need to be inspiring them to find meaning in what they are asking their teams to do.  I need to be their pastor…God has been pushing me into this role faster than I had thought would happen 4 years ago and behold, here it is already.

So I confess here publicly that the systems that I have put into place are holding this ministry back.  As I walk around breaking them I am praying that God will be moving in the lives of those that will be thrust into leadership.  It happened for me as result of a need, its time to allow the Holy Spirit to move through me and into the lives of the emerging leaders around me so they can experience the same empowerment.

Pray for me…its not going to be easy.

Church Admin | Team Communication

May 29th, 2008 John Posted in Church, Church Admin, Impact Church No Comments »

Its been a long time since I visited this topic. Its not because I haven’t thought of it or haven’t wanted to take a look at it but because I feel that even though Impact Church has some great ideas, we still don’t do this as well as we could. That being said, I am not going to represent myself as any kind of authority on this particular topic. I am also very open to anything anyone wants to add to my thoughts on this matter. So lets take a look at it, shall we?

We use a few printed tools as well as a few virtual tools.  Any of the printed tools can be found in generic PDF format in my Shared Resources widget to the right.

Still Slow on the Blogging Front

May 7th, 2008 John Posted in Blogging, Church, Friends, Impact Church 2 Comments »

I am finding that lately blogging is not taking the priority that I would like it to. For those of you following and waiting for the next installment of Church Admin I am still brewing the next topic which is Team Communication. I have been dragging my feet to write this one because over the last month or so God has been showing me that we are not doing it as well as we could. In fact, its still a major stumbling block for us as I am sure it is for any decentralized church with no office. Having said that, its only fair to mention that I tend to feel spun out when things start getting ugly and I haven’t felt like I have all the tires on the road for a while. But rest assured, as we have addressed some of our team communication issues we have also discovered some good solutions that I will share here.

Jeff & Travis at Pipes in CardiffHaving said its time to share: We just had a short staff retreat to San Elijo State Beach in San Diego Sun-Tuesday. It was fun to hang out with the guys and ride our bikes all around and eat out of the deli at the Seaside Market in Cardiff. We stopped in Escondido on the way down to grab the RV. I really love that thing, its as old as me and everything still works thanks to the attention and care my dad tends to give every vehicle he owns. We had a couple of great discussions about Vince’s passion - communication; or as I call it out-of-house communication. I will share some of the ideas as part of the Church Admin series.

Where is your favorite place to camp in a tent or in an RV? Growing up I always went with my family to camp outside of Southern California. The harder it is to get where you are going the more secluded it’s going to be and we liked it like that.  I would love to check out some new places and see what Southern California camping has to offer.

Church Admin | Team Communication

April 8th, 2008 John Posted in Blogging, Church, Church Admin, Impact Church 2 Comments »

Team communication is the single most important component to church administration. Without it we can go no where. There are a lot of dimensions to team communication. There is the required communication between pastors, ministry leaders, oversight, your congregation and your community.  Each dimension of communication has its own set of tools. I will outline for you the biggest components of communication for Impact Church:

  1. Church Management System (CMS)
  2. Front End Website
  3. Ministry Meetings
  4. SMS
  5. Print

Church Admin | Calendars

March 31st, 2008 John Posted in Blogging, Church, Church Admin, Impact Church, Organization 1 Comment »

We all use calendars in our daily lives, they keep us on track and help us to figure out when stuff is happening. Who doesn’t have a calendar hanging on their fridge or on the wall in their kitchen? And if most of you are like me then you depend on that calendar to know when everything is happening and when your family’s things are going on. Have I beat this obvious observation to death yet? Well, a church calendar needs to be something that we count on just like the family calendar. It needs to be somewhere people see it and it needs to be something that we all refer to regularly, not just staff. In my last Church Admin post I mentioned the calendars that are provided in most CMS’s (Church Management Systems) and noted that they are often not useful for normal people. This is why Impact Church abandoned our dependency on the CMS calendar a long time ago. What did we switch to?
