What the ひらがな, 平仮名!?

This morning when I jumped online to check out what happened in the world overnight I was greeted by an unusual set of google search results.  I typed in my search in my Firefox search bar and the Google redirected me to http://www.google.co.jp and I couldn’t get it to stop.  Do yourself a favor and don’t click on that link – you might get permanently redirected.

I scoured Yahoo! to find an answer (Because I can’t read Japanese) and found THIS BLOG POST with a good answer.  In a nutshel go to http://www.google.com/ncr and it will reset your server location.

Turns out somehow the local server for my IP was reassigned to Japan.  Probaly not a problem with my Firefox or my system.  An AVG scan showed nothing was wrong.  I guess sometimes the IP – Search server gets mixed up.

Can anyone tell me WHY this happens?  I have only managed to figure out the fix.
