Britney Spears | What Have We Done?

I don’t pay much attention to the pop stars that are a part of our culture. In fact, until recently I couldn’t tell the difference between Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson if I saw them on TV! But lately Spears has been in the news a lot and its all bad. One of many examples is this article at MSNBC making a big fuss about her latest news flash – a hit and run arraignment. I hear all over the news that Britney is a mess and that she has lost custody of her kids to her already questionable ex-husband, she has drug issues, she has legal issues…people even talk about her being fat! So I just have to wonder where will this all end? And you might be surprised to hear that I am not talking about her actions, or even the actions of the press! I am talking about this condemnation of her by the majority of America without taking any responsibility for her condition upon ourselves. Now, normally I will be the first to proclaim that one should overcome the pressures of one’s life and rise above to what they know is right. And in this instance I still insist on that standard, however I think that Britney is a unique example. Lets not forget that she was an American sex symbol at the age of 16! Enormous numbers of men would count down the minutes until she turned 18 and would be eligible to pose nude. People would publicly speculate when and if she was going to loose her virginity. People, this was a young girl – maybe a junior in high school that was being sexually abused by the media and those that fuel the media…us. So, is it any wonder that she is having the issues that she is having now. As a believer of God I am convinced that the Christian community should have and still should stand up against this – not her behavior but the exploitation of a person in pain. What adds to the injustice is that her pain has been caused by the very people that are now harassing and humiliating her. When I look at Britney Spears I see the result of a twisted and perverted people using up a young girl’s youth and throwing her aside when she flames out and crashes.
